Misinformation and the media

In the coming weeks and months, I’ll be using this blog to start researching and thinking about a new subject: the social and psychological mechanisms behind the spread of misinformation, and the role that traditional media plays in either debunking or perpetuating those myths.

In recent weeks we’ve seen a few interesting studies published in this emerging field, and I plan to explore each in turn. I’m still trying to figure out exactly where I fit in, as I love approaching the subject from so many directions: as a journalist, as a philosopher (13+ years since I studied it formally, but I still like to think of myself as one) and as a member of the skeptical movement. Hopefully writing this blog will help me fit together the pieces of this complex subject, and figure out what I am best placed to contribute.

More soon.
